Political science is part of the social sciences, which have been developing predominantly in the US and Western Europe since the early 20th century. The expansion of political science naturally occurred in countries with a democratic form of government that had its model in the democracy of Greek Athens. Perikles (495 BC - 429 BC) is considered the most important democratic statesman of ancient Greece. As an elected political figure, he advocated the political rights of free adult men, which until then only belonged to aristocrats, majority vote, and the participation of poor people in a jury court. Athens' greatest opponent was the militaristic oriented Sparta in the ancient world.
